Local Attractions/Places to visit/Things to See and Do in Perthshire
Dunning
is a quiet unspoiled
rural village situated right in the heart of the Ochil Hills in Perthshire
and is a perfect location for those wishing to be off the beaten track yet
still centrally located for easy travel. The world famous
Gleneagles Golf
Complex and Hotel is situated close by. There are also many
Pictish relics
around the area including stone coffins and standing stones. The historic
Dupplin Cross is now housed in the nave of St Serf's
Church, a 12th
Century Norman Church which is situated right in the middle of the village
and about a mile outside the village stands a monument to the mysterious
Maggie Walls who apparently was a local witch who was burned to death in
the 17th century. There are many local woodland walks and there are tennis
courts, a bowling green and a 9-hole golf course in the village but
there are also many other beautiful places to see within easy reach. The
village is situated in the Earn valley, surrounded by rolling hills and
beautiful scenery, and is an ideal location for touring, and for
walking, fishing, golfing and many other countryside
activities.
Walking in Perthshire
Within a few
minutes walk of the hotel you can choose from a gentle ramble round the
local glen to a more challenging walk up the Ochil Hills. A short car
journey up through Crieff towards the Highlands gives you the opportunity
of "bagging a munro" although this should perhaps be left to the more
"serious" hillwalkers. The beautiful countryside round
Dunning gives
plenty scope for the nature lover to while away a few hours in tranquil
surroundings.
Fishing for salmon and trout in Perthshire
Dunning has a flourishing Angling Club with a beat on the river
Earn
nearby. Daily fishing permits can be obtained locally or if you prefer
fishing for trout there are a few good well stocked fisheries in the area
where permits can be obtained for a few pounds.
For Golfing Holidays in Scotland
Dunning Golf Course is just a two minute walk from the hotel and
offers a challenging 9-hole (par 66) course.
There are many other courses in the area within an easy 45 minute car
drive and for those golfers who prefer a sterner test perhaps the best
known is the PGA course at the
Gleneagles Hotel
which is
around five miles away. Travel to and from local courses can be arranged
on request.
Other Activities
If walking, golf or fishing are not to your liking, other activities
include:
- all-weather tennis
- bowling
- horse riding
- shooting
Hire of equipment for some of the above activities are available locally.
